Jackie Ralph: Creature - Art Collector

‘Horse' is a sculpture about frustration. The horse has been chosen for two reasons: firstly, the horse embodies both fragility and strength in the dynamics of its mass, and the aim is to represent these conflicted states through distortion of the form; and secondly, the horse, often viewed as an extension of man, is presented alone, its intrinsic condition as sentient being the key facilitator of content.

“Opposing qualities next to each other are used to create tension within the form. The static rigidity in the forelegs contrasts with the back legs, which are bent into illogical positions allowing for a sense of brokenness. The horse¹s head is bent backwards biting at itself, its engagement with surroundings cut off. Through the use of physical distortion, the conditions of unease and discontent are emphasized.” Jackie Ralph
