Jacqui Stockdale: Super Naturale - Art Collector

Jacqui Stockdale, Naamah, 2014. Courtesy: the artist and Helen Gory Galarie, Melbourne

Jacqui Stockdale’s compelling photographic portraits reflect her ongoing fascination with history, folklore and cultural identity. Dressed in costumes and masks she has collected on her travels, her fanciful hybrid characters are layered with cross-cultural and personal references. They are at once comical, grotesque and beautiful.

‘Otherworldly creatures of an unknown mythology, are retrieved from the time capsule of their secret space, and are brought forth by Stockdale as archetypal figments of our hidden needs and unfocused wants. They are a scrambling of desires, held just for a moment in the stillness of the shutter speed.’ (Emily Cormack, 2014)

Jacqui Stockdale was joint winner of the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize 2012 and is a past winner of the Belle Arti Prize and the Hutchins Art Prize. In 2013 Stockdale’s photographs were curated into the exhibition ‘Living Rooms’ at the Louvre Museum, Paris and her work was acquired by the National Gallery of Australia. Stockdale will undertake an Australia Council Residency in Barcelona in 2014.
