Jake Walker wins inaugural Arkley prize - Art Collector

17 August 2010 | New Zealand-born painter and photographer Jake Walker has won the inaugural Arkley Prize.

The award, which was announced at NotFair in Melbourne, was founded by the family of the late Howard Arkley and is intended to be held every two years. Walker was selected for a group of four paintings exploring the idea of naive landscapes.

In an interview with NotFair organisers, Walker said of his working process: "When producing a work inspired by or copied from a found landscape, I have to work towards the original in a planned manner, blocking out the reality that at some stage the work is going to dramatically depart from that direction. The trouble with this process is that only about 1 in 4 paintings work out and see the light of day."
