9 October 2013 | Sydney-based sculptor and photographer Jamie North has won the inaugural NSW Visual Arts Fellowship for Emerging Artists.

North's practice is concerned with human impacted landscapes. His current body of work incorporates slag, a by-product of steel manufacturing, worked into objects that host a variety of plant species - an installation shot is shown above.

The fellowship, which replaces the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship, is valued at $30,000 and allows the artist to undertake self-directed professional development. North will use his fellowship to undertake research and residencies across the United States.

12 artists were shortlisted for the fellowship - Sean Rafferty, Jonny Niesche, Tom Polo, Marian Tubbs, Justine Varga, JD Reforma, Mark Shorter, David Capra, Pia van Gelder, Ella Barclay, Todd Robinson, and Jamie North. All finalists are being showcased in an exhibition at the Artspace Visual Arts Centre in Sydney until 20 October 2013.
