Johl Dwyer: Icicles - Art Collector

L-R: Johl Dwyer, Talk, Watches and Arc, 2014. Plaster, acrylic, oil, 24 carat gold and cedar, 20 x 35 x 2cm each. Courtesy: the artist, Kallan MacLeod and Tim Melville Gallery, Auckland

Johl Dwyer’s plaster and cedar artworks are set into forms recognisable as paintings in a making process whereby the artist assays pictorial space as well as the grammar of painting itself.

From soft chalky whites to glowing jewel tones the colours bloom and mutate throughout the making process, recording the passage of time as the substrate transforms from liquid to solid. By relinquishing control and introducing chance into a process of scientific consistency Dwyer uncovers a potential for lyricism within the presence of austerity.
