John Kelly: Sunshine and Moonlight - Art Collector

John Kelly, Self portrait as a parasite, 2006, oil on canvas, 162 x 196cm.

John Kelly’s painterly translations of Sidney Nolan’s ‘Boy and the moon’ 1939-1940 are exceptional images for an artist who is predominantly a landscape painter, for they hinge on the challenge of affecting a mode of minimalist abstraction while also delivering a complex slight of hand. The layered image recalls the surrealist ambitions of a past generation of Australian artists while advancing also Kelly’s own contemporary vision. Closer examination will reveal painterly surfaces that are crafted with the utmost precision and a clear facility where paint on canvas is concerned. Dr Damian Smith, exhibition curator, 2017.
