Born in Sydney in 1949, John Nixon lives and works in Melbourne. He has been exhibiting his abstract paintings since his first exhibition at the Melbourne avant-garde gallery Pinacotheca, in 1973. Nixon’s elegant experiments in non-objective painting have been extensively exhibited nationally and internationally since then. Nixon was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship Award in 2001 and was the winner of the Clemenger Contemporary Art Award, Melbourne in 1999. He represented Australia at Documenta 7, Kassel, Germany in 1982. His works are in all major state museum collections in Australia, and in public collections in Denmark, France, Germany, Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Switzerland, and the United States.
