Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula: Tjupurrulaku - Art Collector

In recent years Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula, now well into his eighties, has asserted himself as one of Papunya Tula's most important artists. His endearing and gentle personality is in stark contrast to the raw, powerful images he creates. Highly charged compositions reflect deeply on his history and intrinsic relationship to the country around Kiwirrkura (a remote community in Western Australia) and Wilkinkarra (also known as Lake Mackay, which crosses the WA and Northern Territory borders).

This solo exhibition has been decades in the making. It will be opened by Nici Cumpston, curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
