Jonathan Jones: Solo exhibition - Art Collector

In his second New Zealand solo exhibition Jonathan Jones uses fluorescent light to explore ideas around openings and intersections - particularly cultural meeting points. A series of luminous light structures are presented leaning on the gallery walls. Their glowing open frames reference the casual style of ready-mades as well as traditional Aboriginal architecture, while a suite of woodblock prints evokes carved designs found on classic Aboriginal material held at the British Museum. The potency of Jones' work comes not simply from its interplay of positive and negative space, nor from its apparent relationship to modernism, but rather from the revelation of the artist's Aboriginal (Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi) aesthetic traditions.
