Joshua Bonson wins $15,000 Togart Award - Art Collector

21 September 2011 | Darwin-based artist Joshua Bonson is the winner of the Togart Contemporary Art Award, an annual prize recognising Northern Territory art.

The 22-year-old was awarded the $15,000 prize for a highly textured and abstract work titled Skin that alludes to his people and his totem, the crocodile.

The work can also be read as a close up of a reptile’s skin or as a landscape of rocks and sand. “My paintings are sections of the landscape,” he explains, “close ups, memories of places and times gone past and family.”

The award exhibition continues at the Chan Contemporary Art Space in Darwin until 16 October 2011.
