Judy Millar: Reverse Cinema - Art Collector

Courtesy: the artist and Sullivan+Strumpf, Zetland
Never before seen in Australia, Judy Millar presents her interactive installation Reverse Cinema. Taking over the entire ground level of Sullivan+Strumpf, the work is an exciting progression from similar works presented at the Venice Biennale (2011, 2009), Te Papa Tongarewa, The Museum of New Zealand (2009) and Museum Gegenstandsfreier Kunst, Germany (2012).

Intervening the exhibition space, the gestural and immersive environment challenges viewers to think about the body’s sensory response when moving through a space. Like a life-size model world, the installation combines projected images and moving components with painted and blank surfaces.
Viewers are encouraged to participate and occupy Millar’s constructed world by transforming flat, folded works into three-dimensional pop-ups; casting exaggerated shadows while moving through the gallery. Continuing the use of her digitally enlarged, pixelated abstract paintings, and manipulated materials, Millar draws attention to the often ambiguous and subjective relationships that influence our experience of paintings. The kinetic, interactive structures of Millar’s installation reflect an ongoing interest in the link between painting and space, image and form; and the real world and its mediated imprint on a surface.
