Julian Day, 'Future Tense', 2017. Assemblage (modified turntables, mirrored acrylic, painted metal, vinyl records), Shepparton Art Museum. Image by Catherine Read. Courtesy the artist and Dominik Mersch Gallery, Sydney.

'Future Tense' presents a diverse set of recent works by artist and performer Julian Day. His works tap into a mood that is alternatively playful, austere and reflective, including large coloured canvases that mysteriously vibrate, modified turntables spinning identical copies of 1980s disco hits and a video work that records a wordless requiem to social housing tenants in The Rocks. 'Future Tense' looks to sound as a deeply relational and territorial means of examining the world, envisioned as a series of tensions that are both musical and social.
