Jumaadi: I have travelled a long way to find your beauty - Art Collector

Jumaadi, Pineapple Head, 2013. Acrylic on Buffalo hide, bamboo. Courtesy: the artist and Watters Gallery, East Sydney

In recent years, Jumaadi has worked extensively with cut-out paper and cardboard to produce shadow-puppet performances, a practice related to the tradition of shadow-puppet theatre (wayang) in Java where he was born. Following his performances at the Moscow Biennale last September, Jumaadi visited museums and archives of traditional Indonesian art in Europe and the US. He returned to Java inspired to produce a new series of puppets using the same material as the traditional ones - buffalo hide. They relate to the narratives and many curious characters, which can be found throughout his work.
