Karl Maughan: Panorama - Art Collector

Karl Maughan, Whakapapa River, 2014. Oil on canvas, 150 x 350cm. Courtesy: the artist and Gow Langsford Gallery, Auckland

Over the span of three decades, Karl Maughan’s portrayal of the garden has been varied, giving new life and perspective to his long-standing subject The works that make up Panoramaare testament to that in their study of an ever-widening landscape, broadening horizons to a new level with the inclusion of icy-blue mountainous backdrops in the form of Ruapehu and Nguaruhoe, which give depth and height to the panorama of each work. The forefront of these paintings hold signature Maughan gardens, sun-drenched and brightly coloured with hints of paths and dappled vistas, while the inclusion of the mountains provides a stark contrast and evidence of the breadth and rich variety of New Zealand’s natural surrounds.
