Karla Dickens: Lucky Bastards and Fast Food - Art Collector

Karla Dickens, 'Unlucky bastard; 2017, Mixed media, 150 × 60 × 25 cm. Courtesy of the artist and Andrew Baker Art Dealer, QLD. The phrase “lucky country” was the impetus for many of the sculptures, collages, paintings and photographs in this far-reaching exhibition by Indigenous artist Karla Dickens. Acknowledging the source of her inspiration, Dickens says, “I was grateful and relieved to find that Donald Horne, the man who first coined this famous phrase in 1964, was ironically condemning Australia for its complacency and failure to acknowledge its history”. Topics covered in this wide-ranging exploration of cross-cultural issues include: domestic violence; disempowerment of Aboriginal men; and historical uses of Indigenous women as unpaid house- and sex-slaves.
