Karlee Rawkins: Freight Train - Art Collector

Karlee Rawkins, Appaloosa. Acrylic and charcoal on canvas, 167 x 213cm. Courtesy: the artist and Anthea Polson Art, Gold Coast

As in the tradition of the native North Americans, Rawkins's fauna and flora subjects are given a metaphorical context. Her train of animals is an encoding for human emotions or spiritual aspirations. The eagle is a symbol of might, valour and perception. It is the bird that flies highest and is therefore the sky spirit messenger. It represents a rising above the material world and the triumph of light over darkness. Noble and intelligent, the horse in mythic lore is an embodiment of power and vitality.
