Kathy Barber: Y?gen - Art Collector

Courtesy: the artist and Orexart, Auckland

Barber’s paintings are a response to place. As a dedicated abstractionist, her success lies in control of surface effects and layers that hint at conversations barely heard. Barber has chosen a Japanese word, Y?gen, which is at the core of the appreciation of beauty and art. It values the power to evoke, rather that the ability to state directly. In 2015, on her second visit to Japan, Barber visited Naoshima Island, a startling art and architecture destination. For an artist, especially one who has sympathy for the transcending experience, something indelible remains after leaving. It is but impossible to remove and is almost impossible to recover.

Barber will talk about her new works on show at OREXART on Saturday July 2nd at 2pm.
