Kevina-Jo Smith: Same / Value - Art Collector

Kevina-Jo Smith, Fire balance shield, 2013. Up-cycled and found objects, 67 x 75cm. Courtesy: the artist and Kick Gallery, Collingwood

The exquisite works of Kevina-Jo Smith are created through a process of selection and re-use of found objects and discarded materials such as plastic, leather, rope, ribbon, seeds, shells and plants. These up-cycled materials are knitted, woven, knotted, braided and reborn. Simultaneously representational and nonrepresentational Smith’s flatter works that drape down the wall first appear like abstract paintings unrestricted by the boundaries of canvas. Upon closer inspection of these wall hangings it can be seen that each piece is intricate, delicate and detailed - rich tapestries formed by contemporary twine from our twenty-first century world. The exhibition will be opened by Briony Wright, editor at large of Vice Australia.
