Kirrily Hammond: The Gloaming - Art Collector

Kirrily Hammond, The Gloaming, 2013. Oil on linen, 30 x 30cm. Courtesy: the artist and Gallerysmith, Melbourne

Gloaming is an old English term for twilight or dusk and combines a sense of poetic romance with a dark undercurrent. Kirrily Hammond’s intimate paintings depict Brunswick streetscapes in the early evening light when buildings retain a glow from the fading afternoon sun - shadows coalesce and power lines glimmer in flickering streetlights. Through delicate layering of oil paint on linen, the artist renders quietly seductive images that reveal sublime encounters in suburban environments.
