Leila Jeffreys: Biloela - Wild Cockatoos - Art Collector

Leila Jeffreys, 'Pete' Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo, 2012. C-type photograph on archival fibre-based cotton rag paper, 90 x 112cm, edition of 12. Courtesy: the artist and Tim Olsen Gallery, Sydney

Leila Jeffreys’s new series of large-scale portrait photographs of native Australian cockatoos highlight the individual personalities of these icons of nature, the most human-like of all birdlife. Jeffreys not only has a love for Australian native birds, but is also fascinated with the parallel world of wildlife living alongside us in our densely populated cities and towns and how we take an interest in wildlife in an urban setting. The portraits of the cockatoos have been printed human size in the hope that people will view the animals from a human perspective, thereby revealing their beauty and individual personalities.
