Leonard Brown: Experience untaught me the world (Russian Orthodox icons and contemporary paintings) - Art Collector

Leonard Brown, Three Holy Hierarchs: Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom 2016, Egg tempera and gesso on beech wood panel, 91 × 61cm. Courtesy the artist and Andrew Baker Art Dealer.

Leonard Brown shows the two parallel streams of his art together in a commercial setting for the first time in his forty-nine year long career. Comprising twelve Russian Orthodox icons in egg tempera and 24 kt. gold leaf on gessoed beech wood panels and fifteen abstract oils on linen, the exhibition highlights the similarities between the two sides of Brown’s artistic output rather than the differences. Painted in the traditional manner, Leonard Brown’s icons are “emblems of the natural world”. Using different timeframes and media, the oil paintings translate the artist’s spiritual values into a “new non-figurative iconography”.
