Liam O'Brien: Surrogates - Art Collector

Liam O’Brien’s first exhibition at a commercial gallery will extend this existentialist interrogation of contemporary capitalist culture through a series of video installations. Engaging with ideas of product fetishism and identity, Domestication depicts a romantic relationship between a man and a homemade mannequin that intensifies into a violent act of ‘dismemberment’. Each work in the series stages a relationship between a person and something else, the latter acting as a misguided surrogate of intimacy – a problem the artist considers endemic to our time. Surrogates thus forces the audience to get up close and personal with the unnerving realities of our present existence.
