Lisa Uhl was born in 1976 she has lived her whole life in Fitzroy Crossing in the West Kimberley area of Western Australia. Lisa represents her love for community and country, through her wonderful abstract paintings. Her masterful use of colour creates an atmospheric rhythm within her works that evokes the humidity and expanse of the Kimberley. In her paintings the Turtujarti or desert walnut trees become the underlying structure to focus her creative exploration of colour and pattern. Lisa only knows these trees through the stories and knowledge that has been passed onto her by her aunty, Jukuja Dolly Snell, who raised her from an infant. Lisa often paints with a palette of only two or three colours, this combined with the relative simplicity of her compositions produces a powerful and very individual style.
