Louise Hearman wins $50,000 fellowship - Art Collector

23 October 2012 | Painter Louise Hearman has been named the recipient of the Basil Sellers Creative Arts Fellowship, a $50,000 fellowship awarded to one of the finalists in the biennial Basil Sellers Art Prize.

In line with the sporting theme of the art prize, the fellowship was decided by a panel that included an Olympic medallist, the chairman of the Australian Jockeys Association and a former VFL footballer.

“Her football paintings are eerie, mysterious and romantic, which are not sensations you’d usually experience watching footy at the MCG,” says one of the judges Helen Walpole, a curator at the National Sports Museum.

Hearman will use the 12-month fellowship to continue studying and painting athletes in action, a series of work that also includes photographing spectators at sporting events.

The Basil Sellers award exhibition continues at the Ian Potter Museum of Art in Melbourne until 4 November 2012.
