Lynne Eastaway: Wedge - Art Collector

Lynne Eastaway, Wedge Green 2017. Acrylic on linen. 168 × 153 cm. Courtesy of The Artist and Gallery 9, Sydney.

Wedge presents a new series of painting, drawing and sculpture that has evolved out of Eastaway’s ongoing experiments with the triangle as a compositional motif. Beginning with the act of folding un-stretched linen paintings into triangular sculptures, Eastaway then maps the outlines of these angular forms to generate compositions for new works. These initial studies on canvas, paper and linen are cut up and collaged onto supports, leading again to further inventions.

Eastaway’s open-ended and intuitive process draws on what she calls the “poetry of material possibilities”. Colour is veiled under translucent white surfaces, layers of paint are visibly embedded into the fibre of linen and cut edges of canvas gently fray. Eastaway brings a material softness and fragility to compositions that bear resemblance to the history of a more hard-edged geometric abstraction, such as the De Stijl and Constructivism movements, and their roots in modern architecture. Eastaway’s scattered black lines and squares over white grounds allude to architectural drawings, and she cites the geometry of the built environment as a constant influence on her practice.
