A central figure in both Australian art and Heide history, Charles Blackman is renowned for his poetic and inventive imagery. As a young painter in the early 1950s he gained the support of John and Sunday Reed, who soon became major collectors of his work. This exhibition traces Blackman’s creative evolution through some of his signature themes and motifs, from the adventures of Alice in Wonderland and the amusing antics of cats to the realms of loneliness, childhood and the feminine psyche. As well as paintings, works on paper and sculpture from the Heide collection, the display showcases original archival material donated by the artist in 2013.
