Manly Art Gallery & Museum (MAG&M) was the first metropolitan-based regional gallery in New South Wales. Opening in 1930, it is considered the cultural hub of the Northern Beaches.

The collection

MAG&M's collection comprises mostly of contemporary and early Australian paintings and works on paper. The collection was created through the generosity of artists and donors including Antonio Dattilo-Rubbo, Margaret Preston, Thea Proctor, Will Ashton and Lloyd Rees. The extensive collection now contains over 1,000 watercolours, prints, etchings, drawings and paintings, as well as the largest collection of Antonio Dattilo-Rubbo paintings held by any Australian institution.

MAG&M also has an extensive museum collection that includes many examples of swimwear, surf craft, and beach memorabilia, as well as over 3000 historical photographs of the Manly area.

Exhibition highlights

MAG&M presents a creative program of changing visual arts and museum exhibitions. Temporary exhibitions include touring shows, artist surveys and national group focus exhibitions. MAG&M also runs regular workshops, seminars, exhibition talks and public events.

MAG&M will host a survey exhibition exploring the figurative and landscape work of Joshua Yeldham, one of Australia’s most original and creative contemporary visual artists. The exhibition will run from 19 September 2014 to 2 November 2014.

Other highlights include
Saltwater Country, showing from 8 May 2015 to 28 June 2015 as part of the Guringai Festival; and Destination Sydney showing from 4 December 2015 to 14 February 2016, featuring works by Elisabeth Cummings, Lloyd Rees and Brett Whiteley.

Art awards

The gallery presents two annual Youth Art Awards with a combined value of $7,000. They are awarded to two students whose HSC artworks are selected for the Express Yourself exhibition each March. These awards present a unique opportunity for young artists living in the Northern Beaches region to continue their artistic studies.

The Manly Art Gallery & Museum Society runs a membership program that allows members to enjoy a range of benefits, including invitations to exhibition openings, discounted prices in the MAG&M design shop, and member’s only events. Funds from memberships contribute to the purchase of new acquisitions for the MAG&M collection. More information and information on how to join can be found online.
