The Garden of Sorrows features 80 etchings by Marco Luccio inspired by the book of the same name by award winning Australian author John Hughes. While thematically grounded in Hughes’ kingdom of animal warriors, poets, healers and thieves, Luccio’s etchings are based on months of close study of specimens at both Sydney and Melbourne museums as well as the dynamic inhabitants of the Melbourne Zoo. This careful observational drawing, a distinguishing feature of Luccio’s artistic practice, conveys a solid and earthly reality that acts as backdrop to a shifting and often stark emotional content. In Hughes’ stories it is each creature’s passions, pretensions, choices and chances that drive them relentlessly toward their fate and their ultimate becoming. The power and drama of this unfolding is captured beautifully in Luccio’s collection of masterful and bold etchings.
