Margaret Ackland: Vestiges - Art Collector

Vestiges is the result of an artists trip to the University of New South Wales Research Station at Fowlers Gap in 2011. Overwhelmed by the vastness and aridity of this landscape north of Broken Hill, Ackland sought a way to visualise the mysterious remnants of human experience - both Indigenous and western - that are scattered around the site like flotsam and jetsam. Ackland's practice has previously dealt with the relics of human experience, albeit a more urbane and contained version. She is known for exquisite renderings of historical garments, with her images representative of the memory of the body and traces of its movement. This new body of work she extends this approach to include the imprint of the landscape.Vestiges is an exhibition that depicts Margaret’s inherent concern with the connection between the body and the landscape, offering a multi-layered reading of her Fowlers Gap experience.
