Marian Drew: Inheritance - Art Collector

Marian Drew, Wombat and Watermelon, 2004. Archival pigments on Hahnemule cotton paper, 75 x 94cm, edition 3/10. Courtesy: the artist and Michael Reid Berlin

Marian Drew photographs dead Australian wildlife; victims of roads, pets, power-lines and farming. Presented for the first time outside of Australia, these aspects are foregrounded: the German context highlighting the interplay between contemporary Australian photography and European art-historical reference.

These photographs present the wildlife with an incredible level of sensitivity and reverence. The resulting works ache for the loss of the individual animal and support new broader ideological frameworks, that are less anthropocentric – calling for environmental responsibility in the face of rapid urban expansion.
