Mary-Louise Browne: White Satin - Art Collector

Mary-Louise Browne, ‘All things must pass’, 2018. Screen printed satin, 130 x 170cm. Courtesy: the artist and Bartley + Company Art, Wellington

The title of Mary-Louise Browne’s new exhibition operates materially and poetically to open out possibilities of meaning. Like the Moody Blues song that the title brings to mind, it is a love song – to language, to taxonomical processes, to order, to calm. Predominantly white text on white satin, the works suggest curtains waiting to be opened to the politic hidden behind and operate as a secular prayer for a gentler, kinder world. A sculptor of words, Browne has been working at the forefront of text-based conceptual practice in New Zealand for more than 30 years.
