Matthew Couper and JK Russ: Firmamentation - Art Collector

New Zealand-born, Las Vegas-based artists JK Russ and Matthew Couper present a group of new paintings, video and collages. The new works, including four collaborative pieces, use ideas based on the artists’ travels and their recent relocation to the USA.

The portmanteau title
Firmamentation conflates the flat-earthed firmament (the medieval skin that loomed over the earth and divided the sky from the stars) and fermentation – a process seen as necessary to the artists’ development as they integrate their artistic practice to the uniqueness of Las Vegas. The collaborations bring together Russ’ collage elements of seductive female forms and desert rock formations and Couper’s interest in medieval symbolism and maximalist iconography.
