The Melbourne Art Foundation Awards for the Visual Arts recognise the positive contributions made by Australian artists and the arts patrons who support them.

Happening next Thursday 20 August at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the biennial awards will be announced during a gala dinner featuring presentations, live performances and keynote speeches from notable arts figures.

Award categories include the Artist Award, recognising the renowned achievement of an Australian artist for a comprehensive body of work; the Visionary Award, which acknowledges the dedication of individuals and their demonstrated commitment to progressing the status of contemporary Australian art, and the newly introduced Young Artist Award. Patricia Piccinini, pictured above, was the 2014 Artist Award winner for outstanding accomplishment in her eminent artworks.

Anna Pappas, chairperson at MAF and owner of Anna Pappas Gallery in Melbourne, has said that the newly introduced Young Artist Award was inspired by a strong need to assist young local artists in the early stages of their practice, helping one young artist under 35 through financial support of up to $10,000 toward an international residency within the Asia-Pacific region. “A sponsorship in this area at the early stages of a career can further excel skills and training, however without the exorbitant costs,” Pappas says.

“The introduction of this accolade and grant hopes to instil confidence within the community, empower creativity, encourage longevity and witness greater representation of Australia’s emerging talent abroad.”
