Michael Cook: Civilised - Art Collector

Michael Cook, Civilised #10, 2012. Inkjey print on paper, 87 x 100cm, edition of 8. Courtesy: the artist and Andrew Baker Art Dealer, Brisbane

Complemented by a frontispiece and an epilogue, the 12 core images from Civilised depict Indigenous Australians in the period attire of the four European powers that visited Australia around the time of colonisation: the Dutch, Spanish, French and English. Any one of these nations could have become the ruler of this far-flung domain and Michael Cook’s works invite the viewer to speculate what might have been had a colonial power other than England been the eventual conqueror. Fashioned from Cook’s subliminal self, these works explore the contemporaneous European assumption that the original inhabitants of Australia were not civilised.
