Michael Cook: Invasion - Art Collector

Michael Cook, Invasion (Giant birds), 2017, Inkjet print, 81×120 cm, edition 10. Courtesy of The Artist and Andrew Baker Art Dealer, Sydney.

Full of humour, irony and pathos, ‘Invasion’ is Cook’s most ambitious project to date. Using a cast and crew to rival a small film, the internationally renowned Queensland artist has emulated the aesthetic of classic 1960s sci-fi and horror films to create a B-grade setting for his peculiar narrative.

In Cook’s account, Aboriginal men and women, along with gigantic native Australian animals, insects and birds, are cast as aliens. Strapping copper-coloured warriors, enormous kangaroos and cockatoos, clouds of rainbow lorikeets and enormous witchetty grubs arrive via flying saucers in urban London, heart of the ‘mother’ country, and wreak havoc.
