The conceptual practice of Michael Lindeman wryly addresses issues surrounding cultural meaning and the commodification of art with deadpan humour and irreverence. The irony here, of course, is that the artist himself is a willing participant of the commodity culture that increasingly commands contemporary art. In this two-part exhibition, Lindeman employs his distinctive coalescence of linguistics and imagery; satirical humour and social concern, to investigate a wide-ranging yet somehow cohesive arrangement of ideas and images.

Notes to Self is a collection of idiosyncratic, pensive gestures resembling common Post-it Notes and taking form as amplified trompe l’oeil paintings. Composed in paint on canvas, the works replicate the scribbled immediacy and sharp aesthetic of biro on fragile paper. Similarly, Letters to Others translates typically intimate hand-written letters into large-scale paintings, giving voice to the conflicting thoughts of an artist and reconceptualising conventional notions of self-portraiture. Through the satirical elevation of banal subject to a gallery status, the works resuscitate amateur painting and present it in a new light. Notes to Self/ Letters to Others thus continues the artist’s interest in exploring the possibilities of conceptual linguistic art, while steering the viewer into appraising their own personal experiences.
