Milan Milojevic, lives and works in Hobart, Tasmania. Head of the Printmaking Studio, Tasmanian School of Art. 1987-2012.

Milojevic has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work is held in major public and private collections in Australia.

The artist says:

“‘Terra Incognita (Unknown Territory)’ is an exhibition of prints that continues to explore my cultural identity and the complexities of having a cross-cultural position; the dilemma of growing up and belonging to two countries and finding a space ‘in between’. An imagined and unknown place constructed from collected stories of a homeland I never witnessed and is based instead upon memory, myth and fact.

Jorge Luis Borges’ book titled The Book of Imaginary Beings, published in 1967 has been a catalyst for my work over the past two decades. The zoological displacements and dislocations of the flora and fauna that inhabit my work reflect geographical, historical and cultural displacement. My work is informed and inspired by the aesthetics and visual language developed in the ‘age of discovery’ by naturalist artists and engravers; Hokusai; Hieronymus Bosch; Dada, Paolozzi; psychedelic music/art. The imagery is sourced from engravings and my personal lithographs and etchings. I construct multiple digitised layers that are further enhanced with overlays of etching plates or woodcuts.”
