Nic Plowman’s work explores themes of mortality, fear, triumph and masculinity in works that are profoundly personal with an aesthetic potency rooted in real life/death experiences.

Plowman's fascination for religious iconography directed this series of portraits, in which he has carefully selected subjects who have experienced life, suffered loss and pain. The works aim to question what is holy or godly, focusing on triumph and resilience from individual circumstances of fate. A subverting of Caravaggio’s method of using ‘common people’ to depict religious characters, these works loft the subjects into sainthood. In essence, the work discusses the very real experience of being human by mirroring it within a religious narrative.
