A new boutique fine art gallery, CHASM, has recently opened in Brooklyn, New York.
The gallery, located at the BogArt in Bushwick, is a hybridised commercial gallery that offers a rare opportunity to Australian emerging and established artists and curators to exhibit in the burgeoning New York arts district.
Australian artists that have been lined up so far include Abdul Abdullah, Lorin Askill, Tim Bruniges, Ella Condon, Emma Coulter, Peter Daverington, Paula Do Prado, Simon Harsent, Samuel Hodge, Kristin McIver, George Raftopoulos and Christian Thompson.
Creative director Jessica Holburn says that the area is starting to boom because of its art scene. “…I believe we can make a significant contribution to the cultural fabric of a neighbourhood on the upswing,” she says.
CHASM has partnered with reputable Australian art dealers to strengthen its stable of artists, including Lisa Fehily, Michael Reid and Dianne Tanzer.
“The impetus for CHASM is to provide a haven for Aussie artists to express uninhibited ideas, an elsewhere in which they feel they can experiment and be provocative if they want to be. I have little interest in appealing to conservatism, that's not what I'd personally want to invest in anyway,” Holburn says.
