Painter Peter Smeeth wins prize for realism in art - Art Collector

5 October 2010 | Central Coast-based painter Peter Smeeth has won the $40,000 Mortimore Art Prize for a portrait of Nelson Salesi.

Salesi, a Fijian by birth, is also a painter based on the Central Coast and is depicted guarding his art with a native Fijian weapon.

It is the first major win for Smeeth, a former finalist in the Mortimore, Archibald and Moran prizes.

The award celebrates realism in art and there are seven categories, with Smeeth being recognised as the best overall. The exhibition will be on view at St Brigid’s Hall in Dubbo until 17 October 2010 before touring to Sydney, Orange, Mudgee, Byron Bay and Canberra.
