Established in 1971, Papunya Tula Artists is privately owned and directed by 50 Aboriginal shareholders, most Pintupi and Luritja artists residing in the surrounding communities. From an initial group of 30 artists who were the founders of the Central and Western Desert art movement, the company has grown to now represent approximately 80 artists. The aim of the company is to promote individual artists, provide economic development within the communities to which they belong and assist in the maintenance of a rich cultural heritage.

Outstanding works by Papunya Tula’s artists are held in most public and state gallery collections, as well as many private collections in Australia and overseas. Papunya Tula Artists present significant annual selling exhibitions with leading commercial galleries across the country and internationally.
