9 October 2013 | Noted surrealist photographer Pat Brassington has won the William and Wilfred Bowness Photography Prize 2013 for her work Shadow boxer, pictured above.

Brassington's work is held in many key public gallery collections across Australia. Speaking about her practice, she states that her aim is "to pitch my images just off the verge of normality, into those dense patches where the commonplace goes awry." Her winning work is from the
Quill series, where she wanted to create "a series of tough and uncompromising images that could still be considered beautiful."

The judging panel for this year's Bowness Photography Prize comprised Shaune Lakin, director of the Monash Gallery of Art; Judy Annear, senior curator of photographs at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and artist Brook Andrew. They narrowed down a record 562 entrants to a shortlist of 46. The finalist exhibition is on until 3 November 2013 at the Monash Gallery of Art in Melbourne.
