Paul Lambeth: Taken to Another Place - Art Collector

Courtesy: the artist and The Art Vault, Mildura

"In seeming contradiction, this series of images was both spontaneously generated and consciously hunted down. The images explore experiences repeated numerous times during road trips within Australia. The experiences contrast the intimacy of the car cabin with the large scale visual space of inland Australia, accessed via the road. While each individual image has its own story, they are presented as a collective narrative.

Preparing for a road trip is largely a pragmatic matter, ensuring appropriate luggage is packed, there is fuel in the tank and air in the tyres. However once on the road and an indeterminate period of time has passed, another experience often kicks in. Through the car windows the vast landscape is edited into constantly changing bite sized pieces of information. A non-tactile visual experience presented at a rate faster than the eye and mind can process. This extreme external visual experience kick starts the imagination, pulling away from the intensity of the physical, to self-generate images from within, creating moments of rest and reflection.

The road as a divider, with its indisputable practical function hurtles us through land space at an un-interpretable speed. The road divides the process of travel from real world experience of land. The imagination helps to leap the divide, internalising and slowing down visual stimuli to a human pace, inserting conjured images within the machine gunned array presented by the physical world. Together, the pragmatic road and the balancing imagination take us to another place."
