|1 May 2013 | Melbourne born and based painter Peter Wegner has won the 2013 Gallipoli Art Prize for his striking work Dog in a Gas Mask, pictured above.|
The $20,000 Gallipoli Art Prize is awarded annually by the Gallipoli Memorial Club. The acquisitive prize commenced in 2006 with the aim to establish a collection that commemorates the Gallipoli campaign and those who have served during the following century. The club also sponsors a parallel version of the competition in Turkey.
Wegner's work was chosen from a field of 35 finalists. He describes his painting as an equal reflection of the bond between man and dog and of the hideousness of war. His work is held in several public collections including the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.
The 2013 Gallipoli Art Prize exhibition runs until 5 May at the Gallipoli Memorial Club in Circular Quay, Sydney.
