Over the past fifteen years Philip Hunter has been working on a series of images that he collectively refers to as The Flatlands Project. This project explores what the landscape is, and what it means to him. Most recently, Hunter became intrigued by events that happen below the earth's crust; the expansion of the lithosphere (100 kilometres down from the earth’s surface) and the forces that have contributed to the shape of the terrain. The works in this current exhibition have evolved from those investigations; extraordinary paintings that evoke the colours, textures, spaces and sounds of inland Australia.
