Portrait of the artist's mother wins Portia Geach - Art Collector

2 October 2012 | Sally Robinson has won this year’s Portia Geach Memorial Award, a women’s portrait prize, for a work titled The Artist’s Mother.

“My portrait depicts Mum at 89, after chemotherapy had robbed her of her beautiful hair,” explains Robinson. “It is a landscape of her face, conveying her strength, stoicism and defiance as well as her vulnerability and frail humanity. She survived long enough to see the portrait completed, but sadly, not long enough to see it win the Portia Geach Award. She would have been very pleased."

Sophie Cape’s self portrait
Stormfront was also highly commended by judges.

This year the prize drew 295 entries, up 20 per cent on last year. Fifty-five finalists have been selected for the award exhibition, which continues until 4 November 2012 at the SH Ervin Gallery in Sydney.
