Queensland Art Gallery turns 30 - Art Collector

25 June 2012 | The Queensland Art Gallery last week celebrated its 30th birthday.

“The Queensland Art Gallery, which was the first stage of the cultural centre at South Bank, has attracted 13 million visitors since it opened on 21 June 1982,” says outgoing director Tony Ellwood.

He adds that the gallery had been housed in four temporary locations around Brisbane before settling at its current site.

The brutalist-style building, designed by architect Robin Gibson, was supplemented by the Gallery of Modern Art in 2006.
