One of Jeffrey Smart’s most significant works, Radial Road, 1972, has been re-discovered in a private collection in Sydney.

The work was sold at auction by Sotheby’s Australia last night as part of its forthcoming Important Australian & International Art sale, with the total sale price to be released today (27 August).

Sotheby’s Charman Geoffrey Smith has said that “the re-emergence of this highly describable and iconic painting is set to create enormous interest amongst cutators and collectors.”

The painting has not been seen by the public since it was first acquired by the present owner more than 40 years ago.

Smart, who passed away last year, is known to be one of the most influential Australian artists of the past century.
