Robert Jacks: The Early Years - Art Collector

Robert Jacks, Alone, c.1958/59, Oil on plywood, 40.5 x 46 cm. Courtesy of the artist's estate and Gould Galleries

Gould Galleries is delighted to present a tightly curated selection of paintings and sculptures by the highly celebrated abstractionist Robert Jacks. The show is drawn exclusively from the artist’s estate the works date from 1958-1966.

Exhibited for the very first time is a suite of six exquisite and delicate oils on plywood, as well as sculptures. Executed in his earliest days 1958-61, the simplified geometric and figurative forms evident in these works established the groundwork for Jacks’ illustrious career employing motifs that continued to re-emerge in his practice over a 50-year career.

Complementing these are four striking, large-scale oils on canvas from 1965-66 together with related sculptures. All predate his definitive, sell-out, first solo exhibition at South Yarra's Gallery A in 1966 that firmly established Jacks as one of Australia’s most distinctive and influential artists. Co-incidentally, Gould Galleries is directly across the road from where his career began.

Following this success, Jacks was included in the landmark exhibition
The Field which opened the National Gallery of Victoria’s new premises in St Kilda Road in 1968. He was more recently honoured with a major retrospective at the Ian Potter NGV Centre at Federation Square in 2014-2015.
