Russ Flatt: Take me to the river - Art Collector

RUSS FLATT, Ingrid & Rose. 2016, Inkjet photograph on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, 102cm H x 152cm W. Ed: 3 + 1AP. Courtesy the artist and Tim Melville Gallery.

In 2015 photographer Russ Flatt won the Wallace Arts Trust Vermont Residency.

He spent his time in the USA photographing men and women outdoors, nude, in landscapes that reminded him of the New Zealand landscape.

"I met the subjects via Craigslist", Flatt writes, "and the images were a response to a Utopian / Arcadian ideal. This is what we could be without the influence of modern culture and materialism.”

Significantly, the photographs were made during a period that coincided with both the Orlando gay nightclub shootings and the 2016 US Presidential Campaign, with its charged (and often homophobic) political rhetoric.

Perhaps this request for cleansing - this search for Utopia - anticipates the hopes and dreams for many of us as we enter the stormy uncharted waters of 2017.
